Farm Stay

( the feeling of it )

A farm that took in guests, rather than a hotel that bought a farm. You can tell within an hour which way round it happened.

( the story )

A biodynamic Slow Food farm in the Peloponnese with four stone guest houses, an ancient olive grove and a vineyard making natural wine.

Eumelia is a working biodynamic farm at Gouves in Laconia, run on permaculture principles and accredited as a Slow Food Farm. Guests stay in four self-contained houses — the Grape Vine, the Lavender, the Almond Tree, the Sunflower — each with a bedroom, a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen and a private garden and veranda. The land does the programming: olive oil tastings from the ancient grove, natural wine from the vineyard, farm-to-table cooking classes, soap making, daily harvests from the organic garden, and olive-harvest retreats in autumn where you join the picking. Hiking, biking, yoga and treatments fill the rest. The Guardian, National Geographic, the New York Times and Food & Wine have all written about it.

( field notes, dawn to night )

A day here

morning

Out with the harvest basket; whatever comes back is what lunch is going to be.

midday

Oil tasting under the old grove, learning what you have been eating wrong all these years.

afternoon

The vineyard, then cooking what you picked, badly and then better.

night

Fireplace in your own house, natural wine, no schedule to be late for.

( worth underlining )
