Yoga Retreat

( the feeling of it )

Buildings shaped by hand out of earth, curving where concrete would be square. Thirty minutes from an international airport.

( the story )

An adobe eco-village among the rice fields of Doi Saket, thirty minutes from Chiang Mai, with a saltwater pool, an organic farm and a plant-based kitchen.

Mala Dhara was built out of the ground it stands on. The villas — Bamboo, Raindrop, Hobbit, Dhara, Jai Dee, the Mala villas — are earthen adobe, hand-moulded brick by brick, curved where concrete would be square, set among the rice fields of Doi Saket. There is a saltwater pool, an organic farm, yoga shalas, and Kin Dee, the plant-based restaurant on site. An adobe dorm makes it reachable on a small budget. Chiang Mai International Airport is thirty minutes away and the local natural hot springs are ten, which is a rare combination of remote-feeling and easy.

( field notes, dawn to night )

A day here

early

The shala, cool air off the rice fields, mist sitting in the paddies below.

mid-morning

Kin Dee's breakfast, entirely plant-based, and better than that sentence suggests.

afternoon

The saltwater pool, or ten minutes down the road to soak in the hot springs.

evening

Earth walls giving back the day's heat, geckos on them, the fields going dark.

( worth underlining )
