Bulgaria's smallest town — 385 people, 96 listed buildings, sand pyramids 100 metres high, and wine made here since 1346.

Melnik has three hundred and eighty-five residents and is the smallest town in Bulgaria, holding onto town status for purely historical reasons — which tells you most of what you need to know about it. It sits among sand pyramids that cover some seventeen square kilometres and rise up to a hundred metres, eroded out of the hills by rain. The town is an architectural reserve with ninety-six buildings listed as cultural monuments, among them the Byzantine House, probably twelfth or thirteenth century, and the Kordopulov House with one of the largest wine cellars here. Wine has been made in Melnik since at least 1346, from the Broad-Leaved Melnik vine, and Churchill is said to have had a standing order. Six kilometres northeast, through the pyramids, stands Rozhen Monastery.
