Heritage Journey

( the feeling of it )

Black and white arcades stacked four storeys high around a mountain courtyard, painted in 1846 and still working.

( the story )

Bulgaria's great monastery at 1,147 metres in the Rila mountains — founded in the 10th century, UNESCO-listed since 1983, frescoed in 1846.

Rila Monastery was founded in the tenth century in the name of Saint Ivan of Rila, and moved to where it now stands in the fourteenth by the feudal lord Hrelja — whose tower, built in 1334, is the oldest structure on the site. Everything else was raised again after fire, and painted: the frescoes were completed in 1846 by masters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, including the brothers Zahari and Dimitar Zograf. The four-storey residential range holds three hundred chambers, four chapels, an abbot's room and a library of 250 manuscripts. In the museum sits Rafail's Cross, a wooden cross of eighty-one by forty-three centimetres into which a monk carved 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures over at least twelve years, going blind in the process. It stands at 1,147 metres, 117 kilometres south of Sofia, and it has been a World Heritage Site since 1983.
