Yoga Retreat

( the feeling of it )

A valley a family spent fifteen years putting back together, one schist stone at a time.

( the story )

A family-run yoga retreat in a remote forested valley near Oleiros — four restored schist houses, river pools, waterfalls and food from its own gardens.

Vale de Moses is a valley before it is a retreat. Since 2008 the family has restored four traditional xisto stone houses in the forested mountains near Oleiros, and since 2012 has opened them to yoga guests. You sleep in a private double in the farmhouse, a single bed in a shared cottage, or a belle tent under the strawberry trees. The river runs through the land in a chain of cascading pools you can cool off in, past moss-lined paths and old flour mills. Three vegetarian and vegan meals a day come out of the kitchen, with vegetables and salads from the gardens here or a neighbour's, depending on the season. They describe themselves, accurately, as feeders.

( field notes, dawn to night )

A day here

first light

Practice above the valley, mist still lying in the folds of it below you.

breakfast

Everything from the gardens here or a neighbour's, and far more of it than you meant to eat.

afternoon

Down the moss-lined path to the river pools, and into water cold enough to reset you.

dusk

The mills going quiet, the forest getting loud, and dinner at a long table.

( worth underlining )

You remember that quiet is not an absence of sound — it's a valley with a river in it and nothing else asking.

Come up the valley.

best time to visit — May to September, when the river pools are swimmable and the valley is at its greenest. Retreat weeks run through the warm months.
