Villa Hills is one house rather than a hotel: two storeys, five double rooms each with its own bathroom, ten guests, and no one else on the property while you are there. It stands four kilometres from Sarnitsa in Bulgaria's Western Rhodopes, 180 kilometres from Sofia, with a spacious verandah looking down at the calm water of the Dospat reservoir and centuries-old trees around it. A small stream crosses the grounds under a bridge. Outside there is a barbecue area that takes more than twenty people, a fire pit for the evenings and swings for children; inside, a wood stove. You can self-cater or order from the kitchen, which cooks traditional Bulgarian food to old recipes — with notice, because it takes the time it takes.
