Mountain & Spa Journey

( the feeling of it )

A geyser at 103°C in the middle of an ordinary Bulgarian town, running without pause since 1957.

( the story )

A Rila spa town built on hyperthermal mineral water, with a 103°C geyser in its centre that has been running since 1957.

Sapareva Banya sits at 983 metres on the northern foot of the Rila mountains, fifteen kilometres east of Dupnitsa, and its centre has a geyser in it — water at 103°C that sprang up during drilling in 1957 and has been going ever since. The mineral water is hyperthermal and heavily loaded: hydrocarbonate, sulphate-sodium, fluorine, silicon and sulphide, with hydrogen sulphide at 15.5 mg/L, and it has long been used for musculoskeletal, nervous-system and respiratory complaints. The town is old — the Roman settlement of Germania stood here, an important town of Dacia Mediterranea in the third century — and the St Nicholas church from the twelfth or thirteenth century is still in use. It is also the natural base for walking up into Rila and the Seven Lakes.
