where it begins

The Indus River Camp holds forty acres of Ladakh riverbank, eight kilometres out of Leh and twenty minutes from the airport, which is close enough to be easy and far enough to be silent. It was built out of what the village already had: mud bricks, poplar and willow, stones and earth. There are nine riverside rooms — two chalets, three mud-brick cottages, two wooden cabins, a suite, and a 1,100 square foot villa with a roof terrace. The kitchen runs on a fresh-is-best principle with a set menu that changes daily across regional Indian and continental cooking. Days go to yoga, village walks, treks, downhill cycling from altitude, rafting grades one to three on the Zanskar, Royal Enfields, monasteries, and birding trips out after Pallas's cats, Tibetan wolves and black-necked cranes.
