India

a country to arrive in slowly

9 places to stay · 12 destinations

India holds more ways to rest than one trip can: a sacred river, a backwater, a desert fort, a monastery above the pines. Begin with one place, and let it set the pace.

India is several climates at once. For most of the north and the centre, October to March is the kind season; the high Himalaya opens from roughly April to October, and the monsoon (June to September) greens everything and slows the roads. Kerala is gentlest from October to March.

Getting there

Arriving
Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are the main international gateways. Most journeys then continue by domestic flight, train or private car.
Getting around
Distances are long and roads are slow. Plan fewer places and stay longer: a week in one region beats a fortnight of moving.
Before you book
Entry rules and fares change. Check your own government's travel advice and the official sources, and see each place's page for its own directions.

Questions about India

When is the best time to go?

It depends where. For most of the north and the centre, October to March is the kindest; the high Himalaya opens from roughly April to October; Kerala is gentlest from October to March. The monsoon, June to September, is green and slow. The month-by-month bar above shows it, and the planner will suggest trips for any month.

How long should I plan?

Fewer places, longer. A week in one region almost always beats a fortnight of moving: distances are long and roads are slow. Three days is enough to reset in a place like Rishikesh; two weeks allows one region to the next.

Do I book through HAWA?

No. You contact and book each place directly. HAWA takes no commission and does not take payment. For a destination, where the trip is composed around you, you write to us and we help.

Can I eat vegetarian or vegan?

Very easily: India is one of the easiest countries for it, and many of the places listed here cook vegetarian food by default. Tell the place when you write, and they will say what they can do.

Where do I start?

With the suggestions above, or with the kind of place you want to wake up in: the setting filter in "Where to stay" narrows it. If you are unsure, the four-minute reflection or a note to us will help.
