Yoga Retreat

( the feeling of it )

No road reaches it. You arrive by boat onto your own beach, and the jungle starts where the sand stops.

( the story )

A boat-access eco retreat on a private Pacific beach south of Puerto Vallarta, with six jungle yoga studios and open-air palm-thatched suites.

Xinalani has no road to it. You come the last stretch by boat, landing on a private beach two hundred and fifty yards wide with jungle rising straight off the sand. Six yoga studios are built into that hillside, each open to the trees and the Pacific. The rooms are palm-thatched: eco-chic suites with no walls at all, just open air and a hammock, or air-conditioned versions with glass if you'd rather, or beach casitas with their own plunge pools. The kitchen cooks healthy Mexican with full vegetarian menus. It is twelve miles south of Puerto Vallarta's airport and about forty-five minutes away, and the Michelin Guide has given it Three Keys.

( field notes, dawn to night )

late morning

Snorkelling, or paddleboarding, or the plunge pool and a book you're not reading.

Up into the jungle behind the beach, where it is ten degrees cooler and much louder.

night

Waves under the thatch, no walls, and whales going past somewhere in the dark.
